High quality sleep is essential for good mental and physical health. According to the CDC, 1 out of 3 Americans don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis. Chronic sleep deprivation may cause serious health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, immunodeficiency, hormonal abnormalities, and mental health disorders. In fact, sleep affects almost every type of tissue and system within our bodies, from the brain, heart, and lungs to metabolism, immune function, mood, and disease resistance! So, it’s safe to say that a good night’s rest is an important part of how we function in our day to day lives. If you struggle with getting those 7-9 hours we need consistently, implementing a bedtime routine is something you might want to try. A steady bedtime routine will allow your body and brain to recognize when it’s time to wind down and get some rest for the night. Below are some bedtime routine tips for adults…
Try to get some form of physical activity during the day, even if it’s just a 20-minute walk
Set a schedule – go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday
Try to relax by reading a book, taking a warm bath, journaling, or stretching
Avoid alcohol before bed and caffeine late in the day
Ditch the electronic devices an hour before bed – tv, phone, tablets, and computers
Try some breathing exercises, meditation, or listening to light music
Turn on an aromatherapy diffuser with your favorite calming scent
Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and the temperature is comfortable
